The Geneseo men's basketball team improved their record to 4-1 by winning their last two games, the most recent coming in dramatic fashion Tuesday night in their SUNYAC opener against Oswego.
The Ice Knights head into their final two games of the semester coming off one of their best weekends of the season, skating to a 3-3 tie against Cortland on Nov. 21, before beating Oswego 4-2 on Nov. 22. The upset win against Oswego, the No. 3 ranked team in the country, propelled Geneseo into the voting for the USCHO.
Geneseo men's basketball forward senior Scott Morton leapt into the national spotlight Tuesday night after footage of his improbable, game-winning basket against Oswego was broadcast on ESPN's SportsCenter as the No. 1 play of the day. In addition, ESPN's Dana Jacobsen interviewed Morton on the ESPN2 program "First Take" Wednesday morning.
The Saturday before Thanksgiving break, the men's and women's cross-country teams traveled to Hanover, Indiana to compete in the NCAA Division III championships. The men finished eighth out of 32 teams, while the women placed 11th, also out of 32. Coach Mike Woods said he was extremely pleased with the performance of both teams in the championships: "The goal at the start of the season is just to make the championships, and for both teams to place as highly as they did is wonderful.
Playoff dreams for the Buffalo Bills were broken for the ninth consecutive year on Sunday, when fans watched the last essential home game of the season end with a 10-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. This Sunday, the Bills face the Miami Dolphins in a "home" game for Buffalo, even though it is being played in Toronto.
Despite playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd on Nov. 2, the women's basketball team fell to the Oswego Lakers, 66-50, extended their losing streak to three games. Previously, Geneseo had suffered losses to Juniata College, 88-49, and Wilmington College, 66-52.
