With Election Day approaching, constituents of the latest key demographic - college students - are having to weigh their options and decide who they will vote for on Nov. 4. "I sense among the students that, at best, there is some mild enthusiasm," said Edward Drachman, a political science professor, of this year's election.
Geneseo's annual Cultural Harmony Week, titled "Through Their Eyes," featured keynote speaker Grace Chang of the University of California on Oct. 20. The week began on Oct. 19 and will end on Oct. 25. According to Fatima Johnson, the coordinator of Multicultural Programs and Services, its theme is designed to emphasize the importance of allowing people "to tell their own story.
On Oct. 15, students recognized "Walk With Me" day, an event intended to raise awareness about domestic violence and create environments in which people can speak out against it. Gov. David Paterson and Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera, Democrat, sponsored the day's events, and students at 25 college campuses around the state participated simultaneously.
On Oct. 15, a panel discussion on the current political situation in Iraq was held in the Union Ballroom and followed by the annual Roemer lecture, given by acclaimed scholar Juan Cole. Cole is a professor of history at the University of Michigan, president of the Global Americana Institute and has served as a commentator for NPR and PBS, among his other accomplishments.
A report released by the American Institute of Physics ranked Geneseo fourth in the nation for the number of physics graduates among 513 institutions that offer bachelor's degrees in physics. While these rankings do not include schools with graduate programs in physics, Geneseo's output, with an average of 19 graduates, is comparable to that of the University of Rochester, which does offer a graduate program.
