A recent study showed that the New York State Legislature introduced more bills this year than any other state, with fewer than 9 percent becoming law. According to an article in Rochester's Democrat & Chronicle, the New York Public Interest Research Group discovered the 212 lawmakers introduced 18,239 bills, but only 1,634 were passed by both houses.
Former and current Geneseo students were invited for the first time to a homecoming "block party" on Saturday, coming together to celebrate connections in the college community. According to volunteer Tracy Gagnier, the event, which was organized by the offices of Geneseo Special Events and Alumni Relations under the guidance of Andrea Klein and Patricia Hamilton-Rodgers, was an attempt to "find a unifying event for alumni and students," since the traditional homecoming parade is no longer taking place.
Geneseo once again played host to local politics as candidates running for New York State's Supreme Court, Assembly and Senate, and the Congressional district gathered for a political forum. According to Thomas Matthews, director of Leadership Education Development and Training, the event, held Wednesday night in the Union Ballroom, was organized as a forum rather than a debate due to the difficulty of debating issues among political candidates who running for positions in different levels of government.
Students and faculty associated with the honors program gathered at the President's House on Sept. 19 to celebrate retired philosophy professor William Edgar, who founded the program. Edgar and his wife Stacey, also a philosophy professor, have traditionally hosted a party for the program in their home during the fall semester.
A new Web site, Ucrime.com, which allows university police departments, community members and students to gather and display crime statistics, is gaining in popularity among colleges. The site allows users to receive crime alerts and search crimes by type, location and date.
