'Study drugs' big part of good grades, some say

One of the largest problems faced by college students is academics, specifically their ability to focus with all the distractions that come with college life. Drugs like Adderall and Ritalin, stimulants used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, are seen by many students as solutions to this problem, especially with the ever-increasing emphasis being put on grades at Geneseo.

At its most recent meeting, the College Senate passed the first reading of a proposal that would raise the required GPA for Dean's List and graduation honors to 3.50. Dean of the College Susan Bailey recommended the changes to the Senate's Policy Committee.

Panel to evaluate campus accessibility

In response to students' concerns about handicap accessibility on campus, Chris Hilderbrant of the Rochester Center for Disability Rights will visit Geneseo on Wednesday, April 16 to provide insights into improving accessibility awareness. Hilderbrant, who uses a wheelchair, will tour the school with students, faculty and staff and then participate in a panel discussion aimed at describing the difficulty of navigating Geneseo's campus with a mobility impairment.

Leaders inspire others at mass volunteer meeting

Surrounded by pictures of smiling African children, audience members at the FACE AIDS Inaugural World Health Day Volunteer Mixer listened to inspirational stories from student volunteers who donated their time to make changes in the world. Held in the Sturges Auditorium on Monday evening, the Volunteer Mixer was a way for students to hear from and meet Geneseo graduates and current students who spent their time working with organizations such as Global Kids, Habitat for Humanity and FACE AIDS.

Diversity lecturer challenges college to confront race issue

Attendees at Geneseo's annual President's Lecture on Diversity were forced to move to a larger lecture hall in Newton due to the number of people who showed up to hear author Bruce Jacobs speak on Thursday, April 3. Jacobs, author of Race Manners for the 21st Century, is a social and political analyst who has spoken on NPR, Pacifica Radio and C-SPAN.

Report: 1.7 million students uninsured

Number at Geneseo hard to gauge, Health Center says

A newly released report has revealed that 20 percent of college students (about 1.7 million) are without health insurance, emphasizing the need for health-care reform in the United States. The report, which was published in March 2008 by the Government Accountability Office, was submitted to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
