A major overhaul may be in the works for the State University of New York, after a panel appointed by the governor proposed significant changes to the nation's largest system of public colleges and universities. On Dec. 17, the New York State Commission on Higher Education, which was established by Governor Eliot Spitzer in May 2007, presented its preliminary report to Spitzer.
T-shirts calling for the firing of an unpopular professional basketball coach landed a Geneseo student in hot water over Winter Break. Geneseo senior Ivan Cash was arrested in Manhattan on Jan. 2 and charged with vending without a license with intent to sell T-shirts critical of New York Knicks' head coach and General Manager Isiah Thomas.
A Geneseo student and Greek-community leader was arrested and charged with arson in connection with a fire at a sorority house over the summer. Delta Kappa Tau (DK) Vice President Blaine Gallson, a senior, turned himself in to the Geneseo Police Department on Dec.
Geneseo, once again, has landed spots near the top of the college rankings. In the Jan. 10 issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, Geneseo was ranked the No. 1 best-value public college for out-of-state students in the nation and sixth best-value public college for in-state students.
This semester, the Geneseo community saw the addition of a new tool to facilitate cultural understanding on campus: the Multi-cultural Organization Space for Activities, Inclusion and Collaboration (MOSAIC) room in the College Union. The room is intended to provide an additional place for students to congregate while promoting one of Geneseo's professed core values: diversity.
With Feb. 5, "Super Tuesday," fast-approaching, politically minded Geneseo students are preparing for the important day when 24 states, including New York, will pick the candidates for the presidential election. Student organization Think Globally Vote Locally is working to get students registered, to the polls, and involved on Super Tuesday.
Last Wednesday, Geneseo alumnus Sean Ryan was killed after losing control of his car and crashing into the back of a parked tractor trailer on the Thruway near the town of Evans. Ryan had graduated from Geneseo this past spring with a bachelor's degree in childhood education and was working toward a master's degree in education literacy at SUNY Fredonia.
Following the death of Geneseo student Kaitlin Charity in October, the Livingston County sheriff has proposed changes to an existing New York State law which would mandate drivers involved in all collisions pull over their vehicles to ensure that no person was injured.
