On April 20, President Christopher Dahl issued a campus-wide e-mail notifying community members that University Police (UP) would begin carrying firearms at all times instead of keeping them secured in locked boxes in their vehicles and offices. This decision stems from a previous policy that dates back to 1999 when the New York State Legislature granted "full police status to what had been better known as campus security officers," Dahl said.
In early December 2006, six students co-wrote a letter and dropped it in the mailboxes of several administrators. The letter said that members of the African-American community at Geneseo had "recently experienced many acts of racial injustice" and had decided to "come together and fight the issues that have put us in a very depressed and academically unmotivated state.
With the Spring semester coming to a close, students can expect to see many changes throughout the college campus when they return in the Fall. Over the summer, the College will begin spending nearly $30 million on campus renovations and construction. The campus construction projects in the summer include the on-going renovation of Erie Hall, replacement of the roofs of Genesee and Allegany Halls and Letchworth Dining Hall, major improvements to the Putnam Quad, renovation and improvement of the Union Plaza, and the window replacements in Welles Hall.
In the upcoming academic year all freshman at Geneseo will be required to bring laptops with them. Since the decision was made this past fall no official faculty meetings had taken place to discuss this new policy. Professor Jeff Johannes and Cristina Geiger, director of the Teaching and Learning Center, scheduled an open meeting on April 19 for professors to come and talk about their concerns with the new program and voice any questions they had.
The term "SUNY's Honors College" is often used in Geneseo's advertising and admissions materials. However, senior administration has never given students a clear explanation of what this title means, or where it will lead the College in the future. The title "Honors College" implies greater academic standards, but other qualifications of such an institution are still a mystery.
GENESEO, N.Y. - The Geneseo Police Department recently received the New York State Law Enforcement Challenge Award for 2006. This award was given to departments according to their size; Geneseo's police department qualified for the smallest class with 1 to 11 officers in the force.
